Miles Jordan Cavanaugh was a prominent Butte, Montana attorney and businessman. Born in Denver, Colorado on October 3, 1865, Miles was the son of a miner and prospector of the same name. He attended the public schools in the mining city and studied law in the office of Carter and Clayberg, being admitted to the bar in 1891. Grace Stone Coates was born on 20 May 1881 on a farm outside of Ruby, Kan. Although she never took a degree, she attended Oshkosh Normal, University of Chicago, and the University of Southern California. In 1904, she was a teacher in Butte. It was during this time she met her husband, Henderson Coates, who ran the general store and post office in Martinsdale, Mont. They were married in 1910 and moved to Martinsdale.
